Is "The Proposal" a real-world situation? Who's going to see it?

When high-powered book editor Margaret faces deportation to her native Canada, the quick-thinking exec declares that she's actually engaged to her unsuspecting put-upon assistant Andrew, who she's tormented for years. He agrees to participate in the charade, but with a few conditions of his own.

Saw it! Really funny!

Let's just say that when I was moving to the US, it's something my now-husband and I would have considered had I not been able to get a visa.
I encountered this myself when I was engaged to an American and my TN expired just a few months before the wedding. Just being engaged is not enough to stop deportation if they want to do it. If your paperwork is not filed and in order, then the laws can be strictly enforced and an engaged Canadian can still be deported.

Filing for a Fiancee visa is a lengthy, involved, expensive process. For that matter, so is filing for a green card once you get married and technically, even though one may be married to an American, if the green card application has not been processed and approved then one could still, technically, be deported.

As per my immigration lawyer.
I saw it on a plane and thought it was funny. They really didn't portray the immigration officer very well. I have been through a temporary green card, permanent green card, green card renewal, and citizenship application, and while the system is not very efficient, the employees on the most part are good people and try hard. And deportations don't happen as fast as they showed it in the movie.
