Homestyle' Cookin - hands down - one of the cities older hidden treasures - go hungry - scary proportions. Breakfast Lunch or Dinner
Hugo's for brunch buffet; Arturos for Italian; Del Frisco's filet mignon; El Rey for gritty Cuban fare; Ruchi's or Lupe's Tortilla for texmex; Kim Son in Sugarland for Dim Sum, Nikos Nikos for Greek; still looking for best sushi in town. ;)
There's a great Italian place called "Fred's Italian" on the corner of Greenbriar and Holcombe. Looks like nothing from the outside, but the inside is beautiful and the service and food is wonderful.

Miyako's on Kirby for sushi during happy hour, it's cheap.

La Madeleine in Rice Village for breakfast foods. Especially the cinnamon french toast with berries!
Gringo's has some pretty great tex-mex;
Bellaire Broiler Burger on Bellaire and Bissonnet is worth checking out for a greasy burger;
Auntie Pasto's on Bellaire and Rice has the best cake (I think it's called "to die for") http://auntiesbellaire.com/;

For anyone on the north side:
KB Steakhouse on 1960 has a good weekend lunch special and good sushi at a good price;
Cresent Moon Wine Bar on Rayford is in strip center, but awesome on the inside www.crescentmoonwinebar.com;
The Olive Oil on Sawdust is pretty great;
Mel's Country Cafe makes a mean burger http://www.melscountrycafe.com/
The Heights is building up quite a rep for chef owned restaurants. Glass Wall, Shade, Stella Sola and the newest sensation Zelko Bistro are very popular. Some good spots along Washington Ave as well if you can stomach the weekend douchebaggery.
