The artist writes:
When I first travelled to the Buyan-Olgii Aimag of Western Mongolia in February 2007, I discovered a Kazakh minority living in the remote Altai Mountains. It is common practice there, for nomadic men to train meter-long Golden eagles that balance on their arms when they ride to hunt for foxes and wolves atop barren precipices.
Inspired by this phenomenon, I have subsequently made nine trips to document their way of life. Although the quest involves traveling over problematic, mountainous terrain to reach their isolated dwellings - the kindness and generosity of the people I have befriended has been overwhelming.
My interactions with these Kazakh people have been life-altering. It was clear from the onset that they had little possibility of practicing photography because of their isolation. My goal has been to preserve their images in portraiture and my passion has been to reveal their spirit.
Lone Star College Kingwood is located 1/2 drive north of downtown Houston. Take 59N. Left on Kingwood Drive. Right on Kingwood Place. Left on Royston. The gallery is located in the Performing Arts Center, which is the first building on left.
